And there was no controversy about the fact that sometime during the weekend as many as 650,000 people in the Northeast region, maybe as many as 140,000 in Massachusetts alone, lost power and had to, well, weather the storm in the dark and cold. 

There was, however, controversy about the snow storm, and it wasn’t confined to New England, but rather fanned out across the entire country, even where it was warm and sunny. Seems as if many weather people and other news people reporting on the conditions in New England objected to the storm being given the name “Nemo.” It hasn’t been customary over the years to give names to storms other than tropical storms and hurricanes, but all of a sudden The Weather Channel, the television phenomenon that has sprung up with the explosion in cable-TV outlets, decided to start naming snow storms because, as the network claimed, it would make it easier for people to search for weather news. Of course, it also makes it easier for people to find The Weather Channel, online or on cable, and that seems more to the point. By the way, the concurrent storm hitting the Midwest and headed toward the Northeast has been dubbed Orko by the weather geeks.

A potential second controversy came from the United States Postal Service. Just days before Nemo arrived, the USPS announced tentative plans to end Saturday mail delivery nationwide in August – to much anguish in some parts, and perhaps even in Congress which has the final say. However, throughout New England this past weekend the USPS suspended mail service, and lo and behold the sun came up on Monday morning.   

What to do?

Whatever you call it – the Blizzard of 2013 or Nemo – there are two ways of addressing the growing abundance of snow and the predictions that more snow is on the way: (1) you can hole up by the fire with a hot toddy and perhaps watch The Weather Channel; or, (2) do what hearty New Englanders have always done in the face of snowy weather and embrace it by engaging in a bit of outdoor winter fun.

A friend of ours in southern New Hampshire – we called to see how she was making out in the storm – called back by cell phone to tell us about how she and her friends we about to embark on a Sunday afternoon cross-country skiing adventure. Our friend most assuredly announced that the storm – all two feet of it in her environs – was “beautiful” and offered X-country conditions like she hadn’t seen “in years.” Nemo wasn’t, for her, a dangerous disaster, but rather an opportunity of epic proportions.

She wasn’t alone, of course. The long-suffering ski resorts and “mountains” of the east -- Loon, Stowe, Okemo, Snow, Killington, Sunday River, etc. – all reported powder and packed powder conditions in depths that can only be recalled by years rather than months, and many people throughout the region were taking advantage by tackling the obviously tough road conditions so they could tackle the moguls. It probably isn’t a stretch to believe that more than a few of those people will be taking a “snow day” or two from school and work to take advantage of historic conditions.  

That’s just exactly what those us here at KL Mountain Shop thought, too. We went skiing, snowshoeing, skating, snowball fighting and otherwise romping in the snow over the weekend. SHELBURNE, VT – Up here in the mountains -- well, East Coast mountains – we take adventure seriously and we look forward to the various adventures offered up by each new season. It’s only early Autumn, of course, and we have been busy finding just the right trails, hollows and hillsides no matter how far out of the way to explore the colors of this magnificent season.

We can’t help taking a peak toward winter, however, not only because we so enjoy skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, skating, snow-ball fights, and the beauty of the back country covered with a blanket of snow – but because last winter was such a disappointment from a snow point of view that it feels as if we skipped a season. That’s not adventure; that’s adversity.

We have a friend in Colorado – Rocky Mountains – who feels the same way. There was some early skiing and outdoor opportunities before Christmas, but the winter itself was a huge bummer out there from a snow perspective, and the generally best time of the year – late winter when the Colorado sun makes any type of skiing or back-country hiking a marvelous adventure – was a bust. In Colorado, March 2012 was the driest March in more than 100 years, and the second warmest March on record.

It seemed like it was the same throughout the country, with the exception of the Northwest. According to the National Ski Areas Association, “The 2011/12 season was… marked by the lowest national average resort snowfall since 1991/92, the second-lowest snowfall in 21 years of available data.”

So anyway, being curious – and having skis, xc skis, snow shoes and skates that seem as brand new as we bought them two winters ago – we checked with as many weather prediction places we could find to get some ideas of what to expect this winter. Obviously, we want snow.

After having read through descriptions of La Nina and El Nino and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (you’d thank us for doing this reading for you), we have discovered reasons for optimism.

In a very exhaustive 2012-2013 winter weather forecast from an organization called The Weather Centre, we are heartened that they expect:

• Warm and dry conditions in the northwest (about the only region of the country with a poor winter forecast.
• Good mountain snows throughout Colorado and Utah.
• Wet conditions in SoCal, southern Arizona and southern New Mexico.
• Wet and cool in the Deep South.
• Heavy Snows and Cool Mid-Atlantic states up through New England (yeah!).
• Above normal snow along Lake Michigan in Michigan up through the ski resorts in the northwest corner of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and all across the Upper Peninsula (It’s good to be a Yooper, eh?). 

But that’s the experts, the professional meteorologists measuring ocean temperatures, jet streams and the aforementioned weather phenomena. While some believe reading the tea leaves might bring some solace, many, many people turn to the Farmer’s Almanac, which has been turning out long-range weather forecasts for over 200 years using a secret formula. Here, too, there is reason for optimism.    

The Farmer’s Almanac (as opposed to the Old Farmer’s Almanac) says that New England, New York, the Great Lakes region, and the eastern half of Canada are in for a very snowy winter. Out West, they say, the northern plains, Rockies, and Southwest will be milder than normal with average snowfall – which is a good thing in that average is way above last year. And, like many others say, the Pacific Northwest is expected to be warmer and drier than normal.

The Almanac predicts that now should begin to fall in Rockies in early November, followed by two heavy storms toward as November closes – a good base for a ski year – with regular snow expected through Christmas. And all of that is expected to stay and be joined by regular snow through March, so our Colorado friend will probably enjoy the late winter/early spring skiing.

Up here in the Northeast, after an awful 2011-2012 winter, the Almanac says that heavy snows should be around pretty much throughout the season – especially in Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and upstate New York, but no so much in the Pennsylvania Pocono and Laurel mountain ranges.

Okay, it’s still the height of Autumn, but it’s never too early to plan for an awesome winter, and for most of the country that is the forecast.

Everyday, NASA presents us with images take of our great universe from this great planet.  Take a look at their Astronomy Picture of the Day.  This picture shows this the height of the summer solstice along the Caspian Sea.  The time elapse image displays the path of the sun.  As stated in the explanation this makes for one very long day!  Take closer look at the black dot on the sun near the highest point.  You are now looking at planet Venus.

 Congratulations to The North Face athelete Alex Honnold and partner Hans Florine for their new record up El Capitan's Nose.  Yesterday, Alex and Hans broke the 2 year old record previously set by Dean Potter and John Leary by 13 minutes.   The new record stands at a mean 2:23:51 and only a couple of weeks after Alex free soloed Triple Major: El Capitan, Half Dome, and Mount Watkins.
